The Loew’s Commodore Theatre/Fillmore East on 2nd Ave. was mentioned in Andy Warhol’s film, “Trash.” That’s the scene where Holly Woodlawn brings a boy home then later tells Joe Dellesandro she picked him up in front of the Fillmore East. Total TRASH!
The Shubert Group is considering taking the old Warners/Pacific and turning it into a stage house to replace their Shubert Theatre in Century City which will be closing soon. Otherwise they won’t have a home in Los Angeles for their traveling Broadway shows. This would be a great venue!
Originally a Broadway house turned into a movie theatre; then in the early 80’s split into two screens by turning the balcony into a separate cinema, this was a United Artists first-run house until it was demolished a few years ago. I was a customer there.
The LOEW’S KINGS in Brooklyn may see a new life as the Magic Johnson theatre chain plans a $30-million project to turn it into a 12-screen house. Theatre has been closed since 1977 and only used once in a great while as a location for film shoots. It remains untouched. Article appeared in The New York Times on 3/24/99.
Rumor has it (must be confirmed) it was operated by GENERAL CINEMA after Loew’s… And after GENERAL CINEMA abandoned it, it was turned into a burlesque theatre with a newly built stage constructed directly under the lip of the balcony. Behind the new stage, the auditorium remained intact.
The MARKET ST. CINEMA in S.F. is a burlesque house. It does NOT play films or videos. It brings in porn-star headliners and has for years. And the balcony remain intact even though the main floor has been severely changed to accommodate stage performances.

St. Francis twin is closed, obviously put out of business by the nearby SONY METERON.
