Broan, thank you. Great photo of Tiffin from 1922. I wasn’t born until twenty some years later but I always loved going to the Tiffin. Thanks again!

Thank you for the photo and comments. I remember going to the Sweet Shop for the most delicious Lime Aid or Lime Ricky drink. I believe it was made with seltzer water, and lime juice possibly, and then it had pieces of real lime on top, and it was so so refreshing. One time, in 1969, I took the pieces of lime into my mouth, and then I developed pretty bad cold sores, but I truly enjoyed the lime drink. There was a shoe store just west of the Sweet Shop, and my Mom would take us there too.

Thanks for sharing. I remember the Lions Ballroom well as my brother had his wedding reception there. Also, we had many hot dogs at Jimmy’s hot dog stand and I can still picture the workers behind the counter. Do you remember “Pickin Chicken” near Grand and North Avenues (every Wednesday they had all you could eat — very good). I graduated from Nobel School at Kamerling and Karlov. My family had to leave the area for safety reasons around 1981.

I saw the movie “Born Free” at the Tiffin a few times with my best beau — too bad he married someone else.

Thanks for the picture of the Grand Theatre, and that’s exactly how I remember it, being so small. I believe there was a shoe store just west of the theatre and a soda show just east of it where they had the most delicous lime rickeys.

I forgot too that many times we would be dropped and walk in during the middle of the picture and then leave when we remembered when we had come in. I was born on the 1400 block of Sedgwick Street near Lincoln Park and my Mom would take us to the Plaza Theatre, then she would leave to go shopping, and return with hot dog sandwiches & fries for us. It was such a thrill for us when she would return with food — now I wonder if anyone could ever smell the odor of food in the theatre. I remember too the Grimes Sisters tragedy as well as the two Schuessler Brothers and their cousin Robert Peterson homicides; it was so sad and I believe that occurred on a Sunday afternoon.

I thought the Tiffin had the absolute best popcorn and I remember going to the library which was just north of North Avenue on Pulaski as well. It was fun going to the Record Shop as well. So many fun and precious memories……

CABFM, thanks so much for sharing your memories. We lived on the 4000 block of West Kamerling and we visited the Tiffin Theatre for the most part as it was so much closer and walking distance from our home. Also, shopped at Three Sisters on Madison and I recall the Library on Pulaski so well, as well as Goldblatt’s. I had forgotten about the Byrd Theatre. Wow, the A&P really brings back memories — if I recall correctly I think they had 10 cent can goods or maybe I am getting it mixed up with Hi-Low. I had purchased a favorite dress of mine at Three Sisters and I can still recall it so vividly in my mind. Wonderful reading about other folks memories.

Did anyone ever go to the Grand Movie Theatre on North Avenue and Drake? There was a little snack shop one door east of the Grand Theatre, where they made the absolute most delicious and refreshing lime rickeys. I can still taste them — they were oh so yummy. One time, I made the mistake of sucking onto one of the pieces of sliced lime that was put into the drink, and my goodness, my lips and chin really broke out something terrible.

Thank you for your post. This is so sweet and touching. I used to shop at The Three Sisters' Shop and it brings back so many memories before change took place…..nothing stays the same. Have a great day.

I have such fond memories of the Tiffin and I absolutely loved the popcorn and the cherry coke. My Mom used to take us there every Friday night, and wow what a treat that was. I used to have my hair done every Friday night at Christine’s Beauty Shop one door east of the Tiffin. Anyone remember Dr. A. Moldenhauer (Dentist) and I believe he was on the same block, same side of the street as the Tiffin. Also there was a medical office near the SW corner of North and Karlov and there was an MD who would actually come to our home in the 1950’s and I believe his name was Dr. Rhia (maybe spelled incorrectly). Lots of fond memories, for sure.

Thanks again. Very interesting — I used the google street view and saw Church’s Chicken, Payless Shoes, and Al’s Beef. Now I have to check out your latest link with a pdf map.

Oeoeo: I just looked again at the pictures you were kind enough to provide thru the link, and really enjoyed looking at them. Thanks so much for posting for us. I wonder how it would look to drive over there today — maybe one Sunday afternoon, I will take a ride and head over that way (it will be a long drive, but I’m sure it would be very interesting none-the-less). It almost seems like yesterday that my Mom would take us into Goldblatt’s at Madison and Pulaski or the Robert Hall Clothing Store on Madison, just east of Pulaski. Also, I recall the Library on the east side of Pulaski which was south of Madison. Have a great day now!

I think the only restaurant I remember at Madison and Pulaski was ‘Good Food’ and those are memories which I would like to forget as a terrible fight broke out there after my Mom took my two sisters and I there for a bite to eat after we left the Marlboro Theatre (where we saw the Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason movie about pool). We were actually trembling and shaking as we ran for our lives out of the restaurant and fortunately for us my Mom was able to hail a taxi cab and we made it safely back home. We later learned that one of the workers in the restaurant had his ear cut off.

Interesting comments about a cell phone being a small device. I just purchased a new Tracfone and yesterday I received a family photo from Florida and the people are so tiny that I can barely make them out. Commenting on theatres, I loved the buttered popcorn and this was a highlight for me. Does anyone remember the Plaza Theatre near North and Sedgwick Street — this is where my Mom took me when I was a child and then later on we moved to North and Pulaski in Chicago and we saw many movies at the Tiffin Theatre. Lots of fond memories for sure. This is a wonderful site and I hope everyone has a great day!

Sorry BobbyS…I cannot recall a dimestore. But I do recall the hair rinse coming in the form of capsules. Also, I remember when I was about 12 or 13 years old, my sister and my cousin and I would put our babooskas on our chins, and put lipstick on, before we would go to see a movie, and then before we would return home, we would remove the lipstick and take the scarves off of our chins, so we would not be taken to task by our Moms. Have a great day!

Bobby S: It was Robert Hall and not Polk Brothers that I recall on Madison St. just east of Pulaski. There was a Chicago Public Library on Pulaski just south of Madison. All of these posts are so interesting — thanks everyone, and have a nice day.
