I’m sorry to report that my great aunt Dorothy Solomon Panzica, former manager of the Loews Kings has passed away just a month shy of her 104th birthday. She loved the theater very much and upon learning of its restoration donated the furniture she was given back to the new Kings Theatre. I know that many people who have been to this site remember her. We will all miss her.
I was so happy to see how beautiful the restoration of the Kings was when I attended the open house last month. I got some nice photos and hope to show them to my aunt Dorothy, who retired as the manager of the Loew’s Kings in the ‘70s. She’s now 101 years old and I’m sure she’ll be thrilled at the news of the theater’s return.
It is my great pleasure to pass the word that Dorothy Panzica (nee Solomon) is about to turn 100 years old! She was the manager of the Kings when it closed and for some time before that as well. She is also my great aunt. I have many great memories of the theater and the person I’ve always referred to as the “Queen of the Kings”.
I know that many others who visit here remember her and I’d like to invite anyone who would like to wish her a Happy Birthday to post a comment here or send an email to queenofthekings at stuartistry dot com. I’ll be sure to pass all the comments on to her.
I hope some photos are released during the restoration. My aunt, Dorothy Panzica, was the last manager of the theater. She is 99 now and I’d love for her to see some good news. More than anything, I’d like her to see the finished result.
I’m sorry to hear that things are going so slowly (or not at all). I’ve been hoping to be able to show my aunt, the last manager of the theater, some pictures of the renovation. I’m sure it would make her happy to see some progress. She’s in her late 90s and living upstate. Even if the renovation is completed soon, I doubt she’d be able to visit the theater. A pity.
I was surprised to see a picture of the Kings on the front page of AM New York today. Hopefully, it will cause some movement in the fight to save it and many other NY treasures.
It was wonderful to read about other people’s experiences and especially the fond memories of my Aunt Dorothy who I will always think of as the Queen of the Kings.
For those who are interested, yes, she’s still with us. I visited her several years ago and couldn’t believe the amount of memorabilia she has including the pictures of herself with numerous movie stars she kept under the glass top of her desk at the Kings.

David – My aunt Dorothy remarried. Her name was Solomon at the time.

Thanks you so much for that link, ZiegfeldMan.

Good luck to those still fighting the good fight.
