I remember as a little boy my dad took me to the Rogers to see “THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH” IT was 1952 and the ROGERS could seat 1250 and it was standing room only.It was like that in a lot of theaters back.then Chattanooga did not get a TV station until 1954 but even with that people still went to the movies and what a time we had.Later in life I owned my own Movie Theater I think that had something to do with it.
I lived in Chattanooga in the 50,s and worked at the Capital Theater as an usher I now live in Somerset Ky and we have a Twin Drive-in and its still going strong it shows all first runs a long with our walk in theaters.Back then their were Theaters all up and down Market Street most opened before noon and ran till 11pm and the side walks were so packed with people you could hardly move.
They did have old out of work B-Grade western cowboys on stage from time to time could not have paid them much back in the late 1950,s…sorry to see the old stars go down that road.
I worked at the Capitol Theater as an usher in 1958 for 35 cents an hour I was 14 years old.If you look close you can see the CAMEO THEATER across the street from the CAPITOL THEATER this picture is about the time I worked at the theater. The first movie after the 1955 revamp was WICHITA with Joel McCrea I cannot remember the co-feature at the time.We had SAT-SOCKHOPS it was a blast.I moved from Chattanooga in 1959
