@Fatman, Have you ever went to brooklynpix.com they have pictures of brownsville up to 1952. I went to david marcus j.h.s 263 and Clara Barton h.s. was the blake ave market in E.N.Y.? I remember a carpet store on rockaway, lived on rockaway bet sutter and blake.
Saw many movies here, was my 2nd favorite to the pitkin. the matron who worked there on saturdays would always cry when there was a sad picture playing, she would always come and stand next to were my cousin and I was sitting, cause knew we would be crying too, especially when they showed imitation of life, we had to go to the ladies room to finish crying she was right along with us crying too. good old days. I think after the movies closed it became the stadium bookstore, after that closed I can’t remember what opened there.
@ fatman saw the picture, was demolished before i was born ( 1944).
Family moved to brownsville in 1947, one of the first families in brownsville housing project, but i know the area.the Dr. Betty Shabazz public school( formly p.s 298) and a park is there now, it is surrounded by the Howard houses projects.
Lost memory, you answered my mind was trying to think of the name of the supermarket(royal farms) that was first built there, use to shop there, thanks. The liberty theater was probably located were the howard housing projects is now located.
The pitkin theater oh what memories . lived in Brownsville 1946 -1991. I was reading what everyone was saying about brownsville, it brought me to tears, because all we had to worry about is being kids. Sylvia wrote about the schools she went to,my sisters went to 84, my brother 66, I also went p.s.175 and surely remember kishe king.I went to J.H.S 263 on Chester St,when graduating from the 9th grade graduation was held at loews pitkin. The ceremony was so beautiful from the ambience of the theater. There was no such thing as cap and gown, the girls wore white dresses and the boys dark suits, when the organ played pomp and circumstanceand we marched out everyone felt like kings and queens. Brownsville had so many movies on saturdays we had the biggest arguments there was four of us and everybody wanted to go to a different movie, I was the youngest so Ididn’t care which ever one they picked they had to take me anyway.
Glad I became a member of cinema treaure the nostagia is off the hook ( have teenage grand children)
This was a great movies use go there with my cousins when I would visit my grandmother. I don’t know what’s there now, but I’ll find out from someone who still live in the area.
