There is a great story about the current owners “discovering” a third, earlier screen during renovations, complete with ancient fire curtain, down underneath and behind the primary street-level original screen (which was split into two). Would have to get the real story from the owners but this screen was supposedly lost and forgotten since the ‘50s’.
Hope this isn’t too far off topic, but the Novelty Court, the appartement building which replaced the Novelty Theater, was the site of the 1970’s shooting of the policeman known as “Serpico”, which revealed publicly the extent of corruption in the police force. This address has seen a lot of history.
