I DISCOVERED THIS THEATER IN THE EARLY 1980’S,WHEN YOU COULD SEE 3 MOVIES FOR $2.50.THEY WOULD WAIT UNTIL A NEW RELEASE GET ABOUT 3 MONTHS OLD AND THEN THEY WOULD PLAY IT WITH 2 OTHER OLDER MOVIES.BUT FOR A SATURDAY NIGHT,AND THE BUDGET YOU COULD'NT BEAT THE PRICE!
I REMEMBERED SEEING “THIEF,PIECE OF THE ACTION,AND THE FRISCO KID!
THIS WAS A THEATER I WENT TO IN THE EARLY 1970’S,AND BY THAT TIME IT WAS CONSIDER A INNER CITY THEATER,SO THEY SHOWED A LOT OF EXPLOITATION MOVIES,IN WHICH I REALLY INJOYED!MOVIES I SEEN AT THE FOX WAS,“3 THE HARD WAY,HAMMER OF GOD,ABBY,BUCKTOWN,BEYOND THE DOOR,TNT JACKSON,STINGRAY,AND MANY MORE TO LONG TO NAME.
THIS THEATER WAS A NEIGHBORHOOD THEATER TO GO TO ON SATURDAY’S WITH MY FRIENDS.
MY FIRST TIME GOING THERE IN 1974 I SEEN,“MAGNUM FORCE AND RETURN OF THE DRAGON”.I USE TO BOUNCE BACK AND FORTH TO THERE,5TH AVE.,FOX,IMPERIAL THEATERS,BECAUSE THEY WERE ALL IN THE INGLEWOOD AREA.
I DO KNOW IT CLOSED IT’S DOORS IN THE LATE 1970’S,AND KNOW IT’S A CHURCH.BUT SEEING THE PICS,I FORGOTTEN HOW ELEGANT THE THEATER WAS ON THE INSIDE.
THE PALACE THEATER IN LONG BEACH WAS A THEATER I DISCOVERED AROUND 1978-79 YEAR,AND I WENT WITH MY OLDER BROTHER TO GO SEE “PHANTASM AND CHALLENGE OF DEATH”.
OVER THE YEARS THEY USE TO PLAY A LOT OF EXPLOITATION MOVIES,ESPACIALLY KUNG FU FLICKS!
WHEN THEY STARTED REBUILDING LONG BEACH,THEY TORN THIS THEATER DOWN FOR THE NEW MALL.
WHEN I MOVED TO CALIFORNIA IN 1970 FROM LOUSIANA,THIS THEATER WAS WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE FROM MY HOUSE I GREW UP IN.THE FIRST TIME ME GOING TO THIS THEATER I WENT TO GO SEE “COFFY”(PAM GRIER) AND “FIST OF FURY”(BRUCE LEE),NEEDLESS TO SAY IT WAS A NIGHT FULL OF ACTION AND VIOLENCE!
OVER THE 1970’S IN SEEN GREAT MOVIES THERE LIKE"BLACK BELT JONES,MASTER OF THE FLYING GUILLOTINE,THE BIG BUS,AND THE GUANTLET" AMONG OTHERS.
I’VE MOVED SINCE THEN,AND I VISIT L.A. EVERY BLUE MOON AND I DROVE PAST THIS THEATER WHICH WAS ON IMPERIAL RIGHT OFF OF CRENSHAW,HAS BEEN TORNDOWN!AS I PASSED IT,I GOT A LITTLE TEARY EYED BECAUSE OF THE MEMORIES I HAD GROWING UP IN THE 1970’S GOING TO THIS THEATER.
