Three police officers and one civilian were injured when violence erupted after a showing of the new drug-gang movie “New Jack City” at the Amboy Multiplex Cinemas, police said.
Six people were arrested in the Friday night incident, with charges ranging from disorderly conduct to assault on a police officer, according to Sayreville police Lt. William Gawron. The names of those arrested were not available Sunday.
The Sayreville incident began between 11 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. as a fight between two people in the theater lobby escalated into several other fights, and two trash dumpsters outside were set afire. There were about 500 people in the lobby at the time, he said.
The first fight “just got out of control” Gawron said, adding that other patrons joined in the initial dispute.
“As we were dispersing the fight, another fight, then another fight, broke out,” he said.
Gawron did not say what caused the fights.
Police from Sayreville, Perth Amboy, South Amboy, Edison, and Old Bridge and the state police were dispatched to break up the melee, Gawron said.
The Melrose and President’s Park fire departments responded to the dumpster fires.
Odds are the land is going to become part of a large river front redeveloplment project. The proposed use of the theater land seems to be a minor league ballpark and minor league hocky arena.

This theater was a GCC Brunswick Square Mall Theater. The GCC theater had two screens. 1-700 seat and 1-550 seat. The 700 seat was split into 3 theaters and the 550 was split in 2. These are still used and make up 5 of the 13 screens. They still have the GCC chairs in them. The other 8 screens were added later and have stadium seating.
Amboy started as a 6 screen theater. The first Multiplex (>3 screens) in NJ, if not US. Went from 6 to 8 to 12 to 13 to 14. Seats approximate 1 â€" 100, 2-120, 3 â€" 200, 4-350, 5-500, 6-500, 7-550, 8-550, 9-230, 10-230, 11-230, 12-230, 13-550, 14-550. Original 6 are screens 7-14. Screens 9&10 and 11&12 used to be combined. Kramer vs. Kramer played at theater for about 1 year. Once 10 of 12 screens sold out. In late 80s and early 90s. Midnight shows were commonly busier then 9 o’clock shows. Unique to any National Amusement theater. In late 80’s during hey day, planes to built a second building across Route 35 with bridge walk way over highway emerged, never happened.
