Saw lots of movies here. The upstairs theater was originally a balcony that was converted to a second screen to try and compete with AMCs Skyline,Shirlington, and Courthouse, as well as National Amusements 12 screen Multiplex in Merrifield. On the big screen I saw Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan(sixth grade field trip!) as well as Aliens and Never Say Never Again. Upstairs Gremlins 2 and Coppola’s Dracula stand out.
I broke my heart the day I drove by here and discovered it had been torn down. This is the place where I got turned on to independent films such as Raising Arizona and Slamdance and Kiss Of The Spiderwoman. Saw a few films at the sister location, including one of my all-time favorites, The Hidden.
I saw a few films here. The one that stands out is called The Moneytree-a “fictional” film about a mountain pot grower. I really like the movie. The filmmakers/actors were waiting in the lobby when the film let out. Irony: I was too high to talk to them…
I saw more than a few movies at the Key. The one I remember most was Cronos, from Del Toro. Brilliant film. Icing on the DC memory cake: I won two tickets to the show by correctly answering three movie related trivia questions at the original 9:30 Club. They were posted on a Xerox in the Back Bar. I don’t remember the questions but I do remember that Russ Meyer was the answer to one of them! Good times.
