IMAX Projection Booth at Scotiabank Theatre Halifax - August 2012

The IMAX booth at the Scotiabank Theatre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, back in August 2012 (when it was still Empire Theatres Bayers Lake), showcasing the touchscreen interface for the IMAX 15/70mm SR projectors.

When it opened in 1998, this theatre was the first IMAX theatre in the world to use their brand-new SR (small rotor) projector technology, so these were likely the first ones ever manufactured. When the theatre was converted to digital in 2011, the film projectors were left dormant in the booth, and returned to service the next year for a six week engagement of “The Dark Knight Rises”, one of 103 theatres worldwide which was given a 15/70mm IMAX print of the film.

It was after a showing of that film that I was checking out the projectors through the viewport into the theatre, when the projectionist called down and invited me up to the booth! He was very generous, and gave me a tour and the chance to take plenty of pictures. Since the film was in 2D, only one of the SR projectors was installed for the run.

After the engagement ended in September, the digital projectors went back in, and that’s what the theatre’s been using ever since, sadly. I wonder if the SR projectors are still up in the booth…
