The original Santa Cruz Theatre building is just down the street. It is still there but with stores and resturants inside now, a big cement former movie theatre building. They tore down the popular neon tower marquee many years ago. This LED lighted marquee neon blade sign out front at the Santa Cruz 9 Cinema is almost a copy of the deco one that the original Santa Cruz Theatre had. Too bad they rushed and torn the sign down In the 1970’s long before the big earthquake hit. The City Of Santa Cruz tore down so many interesting things in the downtown area. Shame on them. You can see photos of the neon Santa Cruz 1920’s Theatre tower in the office building lobby next to the former theatre on Pacfic Ave and Walnut St in the downtown area.
