Now mainly showing classic films from Romania’s archive. Recently watched King of Kings (1927) which was a wonderful experience.

Originally a bar area, by the time I regularly went in the 90s it was closed and used by staff. Not sure when it was whited out.

Just about to be demolished to make way for flats. Announced in local paper, The Argus.

This cinema has just been put on the market for just over £2 million as a commercial site. It is rumored to be closing at the end of the summer 2020 unless a buyer who wishes to continue the concern comes forward. It is felt that the new cinema nearby has killed the business. If this happens it will miss its centenary by a few months.

This cinema was closed on 23rd May 2019. The local council decided not to renew the lease on the property. The last film screened was John Wick 3.

Sadly it was a temporary opening to cover some festivals. The metal grating is now back across the entrance.

The cinema is in the grounds of the French Embassy. Make sure you have photographic I.D. if you want to get in.

Walked past today and the boarding is down. There are posters up with a program for last week and other posters with coming soon. The original sign is still up but all the new posters say the name is now ‘Cinema Cassandra’ Hopefully it is a permanent reopening and not temporary.

It was closed due to the building being deemed unsafe in the event of an earthquake. The same fate befell the Scala and Studio cinema all in the same street.

No films have been shown here for over 6 months. It seems theatre is now the main source of income.

Probably closing soon due to the opening of a new 9 screen cineworld in the centre of Eastbourne. This could also be a threat for the Curzon located near to the new site.

This cinema is also used on a regular basis as a theatre. Due to this they have the novelty feature of little binoculars in the backs of the chairs.

Made a visit to this cinema today. The single screen has a flat floor with no banking or slope. Due to this the screen is raised quite high up and therefore the viewing angle isn’t great. The seats are rather old and uncomfortable. There is a balcony but it was closed today, I am not sure if this is permanent or temporary as the person working today had very little English. It does have a certain nostalgic quality which I quite liked and the prices are incredibly cheap, 10 Lei which translates to £2. The choice of films is largely mainstream with a few more arthouse movies thrown in. Today’s movies were ‘I Feel Pretty’, ‘Truth or Dare’ and ‘Loving Vincent’.

This cinema is closing on March 31st. It will reopen as a 3 screen cinema in 2022 with approx 600 seats across the screens. From the plans it looks like the front of the building is being saved but with all being being rebuilt. Very sad news but with a hint of optimism.
