I was a teenager in Bethel in 1976 and it was surprising that a tiny town of 12,000 people had a porn theater the “Penthouse Cinema”. Glad to know it has survived and is showing mainstream films.
In 1981 a group of us left our prom to go to the drive in as we knew it was closing, they were showing “The Incredible Shrinking Woman” with Lily Tomlin. The prom was across the street at the Holiday Inn. It was funny to see guys in tuxedos and girls in gowns walking around!
I remember this theater as it was the first time my Mother allowed me to go to a movie without a parent, it was playing The Towering Inferno. I also remember there was a line down the block when Earthquake opened, they had installed the special sound system so you could “feel” the quake. It was not around for very long before changing to the Casino Club. The drive in was next door too.
