Having lived here in Oakland Park (north Lauderdale) since 1955, I can vividly recall occasional trips with my family (and later into the 1970’s with car-fulls of my best friends) to the classic ‘Davie Boulevard Drive-In’ theater (although, the ‘Federal’ and ‘North Andrews’ Drive-Ins were a bit closer to my area)! I remember it being a very clean and well-maintained theater … it even had an outdoor seating area next to the concession stand (similar to that of the ‘North Andrews Drive-In’). During the early 1970' the theater (specifically) would host all-night “Dusk-to-Dawn Horror-thons” and “Sci-Fi” features on most weekends … we had a blast! I have been searching the web for ANY images of this theater, but have found absolutely NOTHING of importance. PLEASE, if knows of, or has any old photos to share … I am sure that the original resident fans and other drive-in theater enthusiasts nationwide would LOVE enjoying and sharing those images. These photographs would be of great historical reference. Please consider ~ Thanks!
Having lived here in Oakland Park (north Lauderdale) since 1955, I can vividly recall many trips with my family (and later into the 1970’s with car-fulls of my best friends) to the beautiful ‘North Andrews Drive-In’ theater! This was a particularly very well-maintained, quality drive-in and rather picturesqe (boundaried on all sides by tall Australian pine trees), and it even featured an outdoor seating section (with actual theater seats) next to the concession stand. It was a very well-attended, clean and safe ‘family’ theater. I have been searching the web for ANY images of this theater, but have found absolutely NOTHING of importance. Having been born and living in South Ft Mitchell, KY (from 1949-1956), I can vividly recall many trips with my family to this fantastic drive-in on Dixie Hwy! I have been searching the web for ANY images of this theater, but have found absolutely NOTHING of importance. I have noticed however, that several members leaving comments above stated having actually worked there and of having photographs. The above ‘Sunset Theater’ in Ft Lauderdale was later reopened as ‘The STATE Theater’ sometime during the 1950-1960’s. As a kid in those years, I used to frequent this theater on a weekly basis. They became famous for showing mostly B-films of the Sci-Fi/Horror genre and teen flicks (along with other standard fare features of the times). I can seem to find absolutely NO information regarding this theater when it became “The STATE”. Would love to see any old photos which featured the marquee sign showing that change. I believe that I finally closed forever in the early 1970’s.
