Never thought I’d see something on my old favorite theater “ The Alex” . God, Me & my brother ( me being about 9 and him about 7) saw so many sci-fi, horror movies there back in the 50’s. I remember sitting in the front row looking sky high at some horror movie and your feet sticking to the floor. On time I’ll never forget was watching a Triple Horror feature and leaving at probably 10 pm. Mind you we were 9 & 7, and were supposed to be home by 6pm. It was about 9 or 10 blocks home and we were already scared from the triple feature. It was a LONG walk home. I think Bill Cosby had a bit very similar to what we went through. AND it was only a quarter to get in !! Thanks for the memories!
I went here many times in my youth. The times I remember most were when all the Wm Castle films played here and they had a ambulance parked outside in case someone “died from fright” watching “13 Ghosts” or “House on Haunted Hill” and the other gimmick of having something under your seat that would vibrate or graze your skin ( don’t remember which) during “The Tingler”. I think I saw the Three Stooges there in person ( Moe, Larry & Curly Joe). Also remember the upper floor and the Women’s lounge as this huge room where the women were appropiately “lounging” on lavish decorative couches and talking to each other. ( why weren’t they interested in the movie?) And that beautiful enormous chandelier hanging from the ceiling. Does anyone remember years later ( in the late 70’s) going to the Hinsdale Theater ( where they had that marvelous pipe organ) and in the lobby, which was rather small, they had an incredible intricate model of the Marbro under glass. It brought back so many memories. I wonder what ever happened to it??
