I saw half a film here back in the mid sixties. My Gran used to live further along Church Street and when my 6yo brother and I, 9yo, were taken one summer school holidays by my deaf and disabled uncle to see a film. I don’t know if he knew what the film was about so we settled in to watch it and half way through the shooting started. The army uniforms were First World War and an open top 4 door car was their transport. I later think the film had a Irish 1916 Easter rising connection. Anyway as soon as some of the soldiers were shot, fake blood splatted their uniforms and that was enough for my Uncle. He grabbed both of us and out!! Shame I was enjoying the shooting but my little brother was my Uncle’s concern as he was very young. It was a small cinema and dank and dusty if I remember, rather classified as a flea pit type, but it was 5 minutes from Gran’s.

Fantastic to see the old ABC as it was. I spent a lot of my film education in here 1972-1977. I mainly watched 18 cert films and still at school, they were very slack on checking your age. In 1973 at 16 I watched The Exorcist for all three showings in one day complete with two St John’s Ambulance people ready for fainting viewers. Three years later working at Debenhams we used the pub below at lunchtimes, the door on the right of the cinema entrance. Happy days.
