Armistice Day November 11, early `20s.

McVickers marquee center top. Early `20s hoto & description via Alexander Spiewak‎.

The crowds at State and Madison stood still for a moment and faced east, toward the boys over there, in the trenches, at 11:00 in the morning, on the 11th of November.

Armistice Day would remain a national holiday till 1954 when it was renamed as Veterans Day, to honor all those currently serving in our armed forces. It was thought to simplify and coincide with our Memorial Day holiday, which now honors all those who died in service to our country.

The date also holds significance beyond the 1918 Armistice as the national independence dates of Poland and Rhodesia.

It is still a date of national remembrance of The Great War, with many taking a moment of silence at 11:00, laying wreaths at cenotaph and memorials, or simply wearing a red poppy.
