First 3D Films Start Today

First 3D Films Start Today – Perth moving picture patrons will be able to see their first three dimensional (3D) films this week when two city theatres screen this latest technique in pictures. It will be possible to draw a comparison between the old and new type films because the theatres will show both.

The first 3D film will start at the Ambassadors Theatre to day with “Bwana Devil”, The other theatre, the Capitol, will begin its session tomorrow (Friday July 3) with “Man In The Dark". The only other theatre in the State equipped to project this type of film is the Metro, but so far it has no 3D film available. To allow the theatres to screen the films has meant costly alteration to their equipment. Two projectors which are synchronized are needed to throw identical images of the picture on to the screen. The third dimensional effect depth, both in front of and behind the screen is given with the aid of Polaroid glasses, with which every patron is supplied. The Polaroid glasses are sterilized, dried with an electric blower and are polished after each performance. This procedure prevents the handling of the lenses. Theatre managers have found it necessary to increase staff for the showing of 3D films.

Cost – The Ambassadors management has spent about £6,000 buying, installing and altering equipment so that films can be screened in 3D – Contributed by Greg Lynch –
