“The Historic Embassy Theatre - Lewistown
THROWBACK THURSDAY - June 25
THE FLOOD OF 1972 - It was 43 years ago this week that Hurricane/Tropical Storm Agnes wreaked havoc on our community. The flood waters crested at 42.1 feet, nearly reaching the alley beside the Embassy. It was second only to the St. Patrick’s Day flood of 1936, which crested at 43 feet. It was the costliest flood in county history up to that time, and the last time any flood exceeded 32 feet in Lewistown.
In this photo taken at the time, spectators stand on South Main Street, watching the flood waters. Playing at the Embassy was “The Godfather,” starring Marlin Brando. This photo was taken by the Mifflin County Emergency Management Agency, and is now part of the collection of MCEMA flood photos now housed at the Mifflin County Historical Society. — in Lewistown, Pennsylvania."
