ARCHITECTURAL BEAUTY
Built 16 years ago at a cost of £400,000, the Regent Theatre was outstanding for its architectural beauty and rare fittings. Paintings, candelabras, and other decorative appointments were imported from Italy, France, and other oversea countries, and are irreplaceable. Whether or not the Regent will be rebuilt will depend on whether a Government permit is obtained. When Hoyts Regent Theatre in Ballarat was destroyed by fire two years ago a permit was given because of the number of servicemen depending on it for entertainment.

Mr Kemp said last night that much credit was due to the 75 firemen who fought the fire when it was at its height and the excellent manner in which they stuck to their jobs while bricks were falling about them as they crouched in the doorways and played their hoses. To have kept the fire within its four walls was one of the best saves in his experience. Detectives D. McEwan and J. Sonberger are investigating the cause of the fire – Contributed by Greg Lynch –
