Ross King (Cinema historian & pioneer ) writes : The theatre was built in 1925, and taken over by Hoyts in 1927. Originally the New Essendon Theatre, after an art-deco make-over in 1938 became the Circle. After it was sold in 1967 it became Europa Receptions. Further re-modelling when most of the original theatre decoration was removed, took place in 1983 or thereabouts and it became Roseville Ballroom receptions.
The projection room was originally downstairs and in 1947 was moved upstairs, adjacent to the S on the Hoyts sign. The operators had a great view of Melbourne’s skyline from this window. The downstairs projection room was converted to a crying room for mums and bubs. With the development of apartments on site, the facade had to be retained and restored.
