Capital Cinema
This photograph was taken in July 1960.The whole site had been purchased by Allied Ironfounders who built the new front section named Vulcathene House, for their offices. The entrance is from the left side and up a central wide flight of steps into the main reception area, similar to the previous Capitol entrance. Enclosed by modern decorative iron railings made in the foundry at the rear, previously being the old auditorium which externally appears to have had little alteration apart from the additional skylights installed within the roof. Note: The Edwin Jones department store in Southampton opened in the late 1950’s and the staircase to the upper floors had exact designed handrails as those mentioned above, which were still in situ until several years ago, these were all that remained of the stores original beautiful interior.
