SHIRLEY TEMPLE ESSAY COMPETITION.

Joan Davis (Burnie) Wins. With the opening of the Vogue Theatre at Burnie the management conducted an essay competition for children, the title “Shirley Temple.” Seventy entries were received, and Joan Davis was the winner of a Shirley Temple doll, which was presented to her by Cr. E. A. Winter on Wednesday, when all entrants were admitted free to tho programme.

Tho adjudicating committee, comprised of five Burnie and Ulverstone residents, and their task was not an easy one. The winning essay is' as follows:

“When I came out of the theatre after seeing one of Shirley Temple’s films, everyone was praising the tiny child star who, with her great acting ability and other little charms, has danced her way into the hearts of thousands of film goers. “Strange to say. Shirley does not know she is famous. Perhaps it is this simplicity which makes Shirley such a lovely little star. While people from all parts of tho world are praising Shirley’s acting, the little child star romps at home with her two brothers and plays with her dolls (that’s if she is not making a picture). "Shirley has a little play-house of her own, with a nice little porch for a tea-party with her dolls on sunny days. After she puts her dolls to bed Shirley rides on her tricycle. "Like any other little girl of her years (Shirley is seven)

she goes to school; but she never goes to a public school, because she has her own little school at tho studio. Her mother does not spoil Shirley, and almost her first lesson in life was obedience. She is very cool-tempered and has a wonderful memory. Sho can learn her lines which she has to say in her pictures very easily. “When she goes before tho cameras Shirley begins ‘play-acting,’ as she calls her delightful acting.

“Of course, Shirley receives many letters from people in other countries. She does not understand how people from so far away know who she is. As I mentioned before. Shirley does not realise that she is famous.

‘She has made many pictures-‘Stand Up and Cheer/ 'The Little Colonel, 'Little Miss Marker,’ ‘Curly Top,’ ‘Our Little Girl,“ and other releases.

“So long as Shirley retains her twin dimples, her curly hair, her bright smile, and that mischievous twinkle in her eyes, we will say, in the line of Shirley’s popular song, ‘We Salute You, Little Colonel.”
