This photograph shows a period frozen in time near the end of the Edwardian period and the horrors to come of the First World War, my own Grandfather was one of thousands from Portsmouth who died at sea when my Father was only two in 1916. The Gaiety was opened in July 1910 by Cornishman William J. Keasts, a former Gold Miner who returned from America in 1903 and opened his first of many retail shops in Portsmouth. The Gaiety was built during 1910 situated between a General Outfitters on the left and Hardware Store on the right. We see a variety of the public posed on the pavement directly in front, beyond the small paybox in the centre displays Keasts Pictures at 1d. The cashier partly appears to the left for this photo, whilst to the right a tough no nonsense looking commissionaire stands resplendent in his uniform. A great favourite showing early Biograph.
