Roxy Theatre

LEFT: Local newspaper report of the launch Wednesday 14th August 1935. The name seems to have been inspired by the NYC RKO Roxy (1932) rather than the original Roxy (1927). It appears that co-owner Rupert ‘Curly’ Owen was not in attendance for the opening. This is probably because his Sydney base – the Ramsgate Palace – had burned down the week before! (Owen immediately put Crick & Furse to work on a rebuild there.) RIGHT: Cinesound started and ended its eight year feature film production career with ‘Dad & Dave’ films. Although not still showing at the Lyceum and Capitol theaters as claimed, ”Dad Rudd MP” had only opened its Sydney run a few weeks before. In this rare example of a full page newspaper advertisement for the Roxy (3rd July 1940), the Crown can be seen as a Saturday night only supporting venue - which it had been since the Roxy opened in 1935. Roxy owner Potts terminated his use of the Crown a few weeks later at the end of August 1940, and ‘Dad’ West commenced rebuilding operations there at the end of October.
