Rialto Theatre 936 Whitehorse Road, Boxhill, VIC - 1950’s
Located in the east Melbourne district of Box Hill. The Recreation Hall opened in the late-1880’s as a multi-purpose entertainment use building. It had a flat floor and a balcony. From 10th June 1911, film shows were being presented.
In 1929, it was converted into the Rialto Theatre. It was owned by Eastern Theatres from around 1930. The facade of the Rialto Theatre was modernised in the 1950’s. The name given for the owner of the Rialto Theatre, is Box Hill Amusements Pty Ltd.
The Rialto Theatre was closed in the late-1950’s and was converted into ‘The Walk’, an arcade of shops and offices - Notes Ken Roe
