BIG THEATRE FIRE - West Australian newspaper. MELBOURNE, Oct. 12, 1950 - Just before 1 o'clock this morning a fire was discovered in the Liberty Theatre, Bourke-street. Dense smoke was issuing from the top of the theatre when nine brigades reached the scene.

It was the first major fire since the firemen’s strike began in Melbourne last Thursday night. No firemen are working and stations are manned only by officers, totaling about 90. for the whole of the city and suburbs. About 15 officers attended the fire. It is believed that the out break occurred in the projection room and the flames rapidly gutted the two top storeys. Flames leapt 100 ft. high through the roof of the building as a dozen appliances fought the blaze.
