Highpoint Cinema Kotze Street, Hillbrow, Johannesburg
Image - Lost Johannesburg
Opened in the early 1970’s it was Kinekor Films premiere release cinema. It had a good 70mm screen and perfect sightlines from all seats. The most successful film shown at the cinema was “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” which enjoyed a 9-month run before the film was banned by the then South African government.
In the early 1980’s the cinema was showing its age. Very little was done to restore it and it became the dumping ground for un-successful films. It closed soon after and was then used as a church. It is now desolate and isolated in one of the most run down areas of Johannesburg - Notes by Roger.
