Edgemere Drive-In 204 Hartford Turnpike, Shrewsbury, MA
When the Edgemere Drive-In opened in 1955,
it was coming on the scene right at the height of the popularity of drive-ins. The Edgemere, with a capacity of 1,000 cars, was advertised as the largest in the state. With a 120-foot screen and a large concession stand and kiddie playland, the Edgemere was a great hit. It joined the much older Shrewsbury Drive-In (built in 1938), along with several others in the local area. For years, great crowds of movie-goers packed the place on summer weekends.
Eventually, the times overtook the drive-in – home movie services such as HBO and Cinemax, along with video stores took their toll on the business. A severe storm damaged the screen, which resulted in a decrease in its size to 80 feet. The Edgemere closed in 2000, and then tried to make a comeback in 2002. The venture didn’t succeed, however, and the drive-in closed for good in 2004. The site has been for sale for some time. Our illustration this week is a photograph of all that remains of this once popular drive-in, the large sign that once welcomed movie-goers of all ages.
