Radion Cinema Newport
Photograph taken after the Radion closure on 16th July 1960 due to continuing vandalism to the cinema building. This picture shows the façade as designed by Architect King. The recessed entrance doors were set either side of a central display area, above there were five Crittall windows, three above the canopy in the central position enclosed by a pair of Art Deco Strenic stone columns surmounted by capped fluted urns, with the cinema name above. During the early 1960’s a supermarket purchased the site, in 1980 it was sold again to the BBC. Much seen today has been replaced or altered, the lower sections of the columns that join the upper Strenic stone are new, as are all the windows as shown in the above photo.
