His Majesty's Theatre 168 Liverpool Street, Hobart, TAS

The building opened in January 1911 with the comic opera “The Runaway Girl” and accommodated dozens across its orchestra stalls and dress circle levels.
According to archives, His Majesty’s Theatre transitioned into a cinema as part of Spencer’s Pictures chain in 1912 and was subsequently acquired by Union Theatres in 1919. They were still the operators in 1957. It had closed in 1961.
In 1970 it was converted into a clothing store and it remains in this use in 2021. The exterior has been covered in metal cladding, but interior decorations remained.
In the photo we see the facade removal process. Contractors were observed removing the metal cladding from the exterior on Sunday morning March 23, 2024 for reasons that remain unclear, with many social media users reminiscing about its history.
