Image - Glass theatre advertising slide featuring the business of Fred Joyce who ran a furniture retail outlet that was founded in the early 1900’s, he also ran The Joyce Funeral Home from the same address. In 1886 he married Ella Hotaling. Fred would pass away in 1925 after 39 years of marriage.

Ella Joyce, widow of Fred Joyce continued to run the family business until 1919 when she sold the business to a Mr George Silvernell. Mr. Silvernell would graduate from Renaud’s School of Embalming New York City to qualify for ownership.

Ella Joyce would live until Saturday May 2, 1953 when she passed away at the Sidney Hospital. She had been a resident of Unadilla for over 50 years. At the time she was survived by her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ada Joyce of Vemal Haven, Maine, and a niece, Mrs. Anna Snell of Selkirk.

Ella Hotaling was born in Brooklyn in 1868, the daughter of William and Sarah Hotaling. Her only son, Dr. Whitney Joyce died in 1918 of wounds received in World War 1 in France. She was a charter member and past matron of the Eastern Star, a charter member of the Otse Una Rebekah Lodge, a charter member of the Women’s Club, and former district officer of the State Federation of the Women’s Clubs, charter member of the Sidney Chapter of the DAR, member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church.

George Wirt Silvernell, 75, owner of the Joyce Funeral Home, and the Joyce Store in Unadilla, died at his home at 15 Bridge Street, Unadilla, on Monday, September 18, 1972 age 75. Funeral services were conducted at the Joyce Funeral Home on Thursday, September 21, at 2:00 pm. A resident of Unadilla for 53 years he had owned and operated the Joyce Funeral Home and the Joyce Store since 1919 - He married Gertrude Y. Genung on September 2, 1926. He was a veteran of World War I, serving in the U.S. Navy.

The Joyce Store in Unadilla is now closed. The proud boast of the Joyce store was that it sold real wood furniture.
