Hoyts Canterbury Theatre 117 Maling Road, Melbourne, VIC
Photo - A closer view - At the turn of the century, windows in alcoves were part of a variety of window designs that were popular, including bay windows, sash windows, and witch windows:
Bay windows - A Victorian innovation that allowed more light into a home, made rooms appear larger, and provided a better view of the street. Bay windows were often located on the upper floors of buildings until the late Victorian era, when building regulations relaxed and ground floor windows could protrude.
Kevin Adams writes - Yes,this was the earlier Canterbury Theatre from the silent days which Hoyts leased. They built their own modern theatre HOYTS MALING just a block up the street from this one. As is often the case the sleek modern replacement was outlived by the old one.
