Cavendish Cinema Nottingham
Photograph of Monday 19th December 1938 four days after the official opening and day after heavy snow fall, a workman on the right of photograph can be seen clearing snow away from the front entrance area in the hope that some will brave the weather to see the new Monday film as advertised on the poster boards “Break the News” a musical starring Maurice Chevalier and Jack Buchanan plus supporting cowboy film “Western Trails” featuring Bob Baker, to the rescue. Following on Thursday 22nd December another musical “Mad About The Music” starring Deanner Derban. A special Christmas attraction Disney “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” from Monday 26th to Saturday 31st December 1938. Disney then would only rent their films for a minimum twice a day six days a week. Heating provided to the Cavendish was installed by Goodacre, Glover & Butler Ltd., of Nottingham, so during that first December all worked well, however, the following Christmas WW2 had been declared in September with enforced rationing for the duration, so heating and lighting was touch and go.
