Como Cinema 14 Preston Street, Como, Perth, WA
Located in the Como district across the river from downtown Perth. The Cygnet Cinema was originally named the Como Theatre. The building was designed by architect William Leighton for cinema pioneer James Stiles and was officially opened on 3rd March 1938 with Rochelle Hudson in “Tainted Money”(aka “Show Them No Mercy”) & Gene Raymond in “The Smartest Girl in Town”.
This fine example of Art Deco style architecture is now included on the State’s Heritage Register. It was closed in 2021 due to Covid-19 pandemic. Operated by Grand Cinemas (Australia), who went out of business on 21st November 2022.
It reopened as the Como Theatre in June 2024 with a 3-week ‘Exhumed’ Film Festival screening cult & classic films presented in 16mm & 35mm prints. Live theatre productions are also planned - Notes by Aidan
