Waverley Cinema New Milton
The new Waverley cinema exploded onto the New Milton scene on 5th November 1929 built and owned by Mr & Mrs Hayward who lived next to the cinema in Station Road. Opening with the silent film ‘Number Please’ starring Harold Lloyd, next was Greta Garbo starring in ‘Love’. In 1931 sound arrived and packed houses, Garbo spoke and Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers danced onto the screen, these continued throughout the 1930’s and during WW2. After the War the Hayward’s sold to Mr & Mrs Plant bringing childrens Saturday Morning Pictures and adjoining sweet shop on the left side of entrance, in 1952 after rationing ended the crowd of children trying to enter the shop on a Saturday morning was controlled by Jack Plank.
