Sidney Poitier Films at Columbus, Ohio - Page 28

In 1971, Poitier, at 44 years of age, ended his Virgil Tibbs franchise with “The Organization.” The film opened its first run engagement at the Drexel. Earlier, in April, “Brother John” opened at Cinema East. If Poitier had not played Virgil Tibbs, who knows when black crime-fighters like John Shaft, Coffin Ed and Grave Digger Jones would show up in Hollywood films. Or if anything like Blaxploitation era movies would happen without the box office success of the sixties Poitier movies.
