Majestic Cinema Rochester
View of the Majestic auditorium, photograph taken day before opening, showing details of the 72ft. proscenium with large stage and huge splay walls with decorative grilles, these were dramatically lit from behind each of the four black horizontal bands. These grilles also covered the Compton organ chambers and central heating shafts. Exact smaller grilles were also designed by Mollo for his ‘Moderne’ cinema Bournemouth in the same year. The Compton organ can be seen within the curved orchestra pit. This particular organ was fitted with an illuminated console and was know as ‘The Lady Compton’ because of its refined tone.

Like its close neighbours along the same road, the Ritz and the Regent, the Odeon’s auditorium appeared to be as wide or wider as it was long. By the time I discovered it, the auditorium was quite dull. However, the projection and sound were excellent and the 70 mm showing of The Sound of Music was superb and could not have been bettered.
