Des Moines Theatre 517 Grand Avenue, Des Moines
1953 - “Shane” was released with both widescreen and stereophonic sound,-
but the widescreen presentation wasn’t part of the original intent for the film. The film was initially composed for the standard 1.37:1 aspect ratio, but Paramount chose it to debut their widescreen system due to its numerous long and medium shots.
A new aperture plate and wider-angle lens were used to project the film at 1.66:1 in first-run theaters. Shane was released wide-screen before The Robe in CinemaScope.
A three-track stereophonic soundtrack was also created, emphasizing the sound of gunfire with a cannon-like effect.
