REGENT, Chelmsford.
This was taken during my first visit to England during a very cold January in the 70s – I can’t remember the exact year. My family lived close by in Springfield Terrace before my Great Grandfather and his brother migrated to South Australia in the mid 1850s. The Regent had become a Bingo Hall. I took its photo because of the shared name with my favourite theatre, the magnificent Adelaide Regent, pictured in miniature in my logo.

A large picture of the Adelaide Regent will be found in the collection of my own Australian theatre photographs that I have posted on ‘Cinema Treasures’, by first clicking on my logo at upper right and then the thumbnail on page 13. It was a true ‘picture palace’ with gold leaf accents and glittering chandeliers, to say nothing of a 3/15 Wurlitzer, but with a restrained taste in decoration which I feel was often lacking in its American counterparts.
