Hoyts Newtown Theatre 218-222 King Street, Sydney, NSW
Hoyts Newtown Theatre, 218-222 King St, originally constructed in the 1890s as a swimming baths and skating rink, it was converted into a department store in the early 1900s, then in 1914 converted into a cinema, re-modeled in an Art Deco style by architect William T. Leighton in 1934, and re-named Hoyts Newtown Theatre. Hoyts Newtown was closed in Sept. 1959, a casualty of the introduction of TV, gutted internally and became a community centre.
In the the late 2000s, it was converted into apartments, with a restaurant operating in the former foyer.
