Lou Bunin's Alice in Wonderland, July 1951
“The battle of the Alices will open in New Orleans this week,“ wrote Ed Brooks of the Picayune. Lou Bunin’s Alice in Wonderland was made in France and incorporated a live-action Alice (actress Carol Marsh) with stop-motion-animated Wonderland denizens. Opening at the same time was Walt Disney’s cel-animated Alice in Wonderland. Disney famously took legal action to delay the opening of its competitor at a New York City theater. (His legal endeavor was unsuccessful.)
While the Bunin “Alice” played at the Civic, the Disney “Alice” was at the Orpheum.
The Alice versus Alice contest occurred in cities around the U.S.
