Memorial Hall 88 Acland Street, Melbourne, VIC

Located in the Melbourne beachside suburb of St. Kilda. The Memorial Hall was built at the rear of the Soldiers and Sailors Club in 1924. It began screening films from 7th November 1927, opening with “Sweethearts”. Initially it was operated by the same owners as the Palais Theatre and Victory Theatre in St. Kilda.

By 1939, the Memorial Hall was operated by Hoyts Theatres chain, playing mainly double bills of B-grade westerns and thrillers, and it remained under Hoyts management until it was closed on 10th December 1958 with “House of Strangers” and “Women of Pitcairn Island”.

The building contains a small stage and a balcony, and after closing, it was used as a rehearsal room and a Sunday market. The building was restored in 1993, and continues in use as a social club.
