Leatherwood Drive-In 33550 S. Leatherwood Road, Barnesville, OH

The Leatherwood Drive-In was opened on May 29, 1953, screening the 1952 western “The Savage” with Charlton Heston, Susan Morrow and Peter Hansen. The second feature was the 1952 comedy “My Pal Gus” with Richard Widmark, Joanne Dru and Audrey Totter.

The new airer was opened by Virgil Grindstaff and Bernard Sarchet. In the late-1950’s it was listed as Sarchet as the owner. In the 1960’s and 1970’s the ozoner was owned and operated by Rolland and Helen Hall. Their daughter, Sue and her husband Jimmy Carpenter, operated it in the 1980’s. The drive-in was built and equipped by Al Boudouis(dba Theatre Equipment Co. Toledo, OH). Co-Operative Theatres of Ohio, Inc was the buyer and booking agency for the Leatherwood Drive-In.

The Leatherwood Drive-In closed at the end of 1978 and reopened in June 1980. It finally closed for good at the end of the season in 1989. The screen tower and the concession stand are still standing but they are in a poor condition. I did hear that they used to have problems with fog rolling in at times - Notes by by Randy Studer, Bill Eichelberger.
