Rose Bay North Kings Theatre 696 Old South Head Road, Sydney, NSW

Paul Brennan writes - An astonishing concise stylish creation: The 600 seat 2 level KINGS THEATRE in ROSE BAY NORTH near the harbour in Sydney.

Here it is nearing completion in 1935, the first of nine beautiful deco cinemas created across Sydney in the 1935-1939 era. Nightclub style cinemas. Most demolished now but this one, the first, still stands as a Supermarket, and was restored in 30s style. Well worth a look for what a clever design this is: rotunda stairs and foyers, “Berlin deco” style, rooftop patio and deco cabin Projection box, interior Euro style and two levels with a deco balcony.

Ocean Liner effect neon and box lighting. Closed as a cinema in 1958 but hooray, survives today.
