In the early sixties, Columbus, Ohio was caught shorthanded when the boom in reserved-seat, roadshow engagements started. Loew’s Broad theater was used sometimes but it closed in 1961. Hunts Cinestage was dedicated permanently to roadshow films but when the boom came more theaters were needed. The RKO Grand was enlisted to show Cinerama roadshow productions. Frank Yassenoff stepped in when he took over the Main Theatre; renovating the house to show Todd-AO and 70mm prints. The location is currently a peculiar one for an elite “high-class top movie ticket price” theater. I don’t know how the area looked like in the early sixties. However, Yassennoff premiered the roadshow “Can-Can” and later “Cleopatra” along with the Beechwold Theatre. This was about the only time a roadshow film ran at two theaters in Columbus.
