Green Lawn Picture Gardens Hay Street and Irwin Street, Perth, WA

Source - Daily News (Perth WA) Sat 30 Sept 1916

The Green Lawn Picture Gardens, an open-air cinema that once stood at the intersection of Hay Street and Irwin Street in the city centre of Perth, Western Australia.

According to records documented on Cinema Treasures, this short-lived open-air theatre has the following historical details:

Status: Closed and demolished. It is currently unknown what exact modern structure sits directly on its former footprint, though it was located on the southern side of Hay Street near Irwin Street (near landmarks like the Perth Concert Hall).

The venue opened its doors on October 21, 1916, and had an incredibly brief operational run, closing just a few weeks later on November 4, 1916.

It featured a single screen typical of the early 20th-century Australian “picture gardens” movement, where audiences watched silent films outdoors on manicured grass lawns.
