Picture House Cinema Haymarket Norwich
A 1922 photograph of the Picture House orchestra and unusually for the time a lady percussionist seated at the far right end, standing centre is the conductor Sidney Skedge who had taken the position in 1921. Skedge arranged music for the Silent films which were notated on Monday mornings after viewing the new film, sometimes films came with with a score, if so there would be a run through with the orchestra. In 1928 the Picture House was refurbished and sound was installed, however, the orchestra continued as many films were still silent until 1932 also there was stage variety. Alterations were again carried out in 1928 overseen by Architect Francis B. Ward who carried out sound installations, there was inclusion of organ chambers, additional dressing rooms and modern heating & ventilation plant.
