St. James Theatre
Fullers programmed MGM titles exclusively from the opening of “Politics” Boxing Day 1931. In May 1934, with John wanting to settle quietly in Sydney, the brothers separated their business interests with Ben taking over their Australia/New Zealand circuit, and John retaining sole ownership of the Sydney St James theater and building. John then promptly signed a lease deal with Bernard Freeman giving MGM full control of the theater. First program under this arrangement was “Riptide” (1934) which opened 4 July 1934. John Fuller Jr. (1879-1959) retired from business activity at 65 in 1944. Their elder brother Walter had died at 62 on 12 June 1934 just weeks after Ben and John had split their theater ownership arrangements.
