St. James Theatre

Top: Colorized photo from the corner of Market and Castlereagh Streets circa 1916 shows the newly built Daily Telegraph newspaper office on upper left. (Renamed the Trust Building it still stands on the corner of King and Castlereagh Streets). The school still operating here on the future St James Theatre site originally occupied the full corner block, but some of the foreground area today housing part of the David Jones store was separated off for commercial development in the late 19th Century. Bottom: Making way for David Jones department store and the St James - demolition in progress of 1823 school building claimed by some to have been designed by Francis Greenway (1777-1837). Northern part of the school site was purchased from David Jones, Ltd. in early 1922 by the Fuller Brothers, keen for a replacement venue following their eviction from the Grand Opera House. They optimistically predicted that with bonuses and double shifts the theater building could be completed by mid 1923.
